SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Josh Hoover (R-Folsom) proudly announced this week that Althea Canines has been honored as the 2025 Nonprofit of the Year for Assembly District 7.
Althea Canines was founded in 2023 by Shannon Kane and Amy Wolfe to empower those in our community with mental health and psychiatric disabilities to build fulfilling lives with the support of service and facility dogs. They offer service and facility dog training as well as training services for families seeking better relationships with their canines.
Shannon’s lifelong love for Labrador Retrievers and her personal journey with mental health inspired her to dedicate her time to training service dogs that make a real difference. Motivated by her own healing and her son’s recovery as a veteran‚ she now provides accessible‚ life-changing canine support to those struggling with mental health‚ regardless of their financial situation.
Amy spent two decades in emergency services and discovered the profound impact of service dogs through her own experience training her dog Sailor‚ a rescued Golden Retriever. She co-founded Althea Canines to provide service and facility dogs to those in need‚ especially veterans and first responders‚ ensuring access to healing and support.
“I am pleased to bring recognition to such an outstanding organization that provides so much support to our community,” stated Assemblyman Hoover. “Dogs have such a remarkable way of bringing joy to so many and I commend Althea Canines for their service to those in need and wish them continued success.”
