SACRAMENTO – Today Assemblyman Josh Hoover (R-Folsom) proudly announced that Meristem has been honored as the 2026 Nonprofit of the Year for Assembly District 7.
Meristem is an independent living program based in Fair Oaks that serves neurodiverse young adults ages 18–28 through person-centered care, experiential learning, and a strong focus on independence and personal growth. Founded in 2014, Meristem provides a unique, campus-based environment where students on the autism spectrum are empowered to build life skills, pursue meaningful employment, and develop greater social and economic independence.
“What sets Meristem apart is their unwavering belief in the potential of every individual they serve,” said Assemblyman Hoover. “Their work is transforming lives by giving young adults on the autism spectrum the tools, confidence, and real-world experience they need to thrive. We are proud to recognize them as this year’s Nonprofit of the Year.”
Located on a 13-acre campus in Fair Oaks, Meristem combines experiential learning with individualized support, allowing students to learn by doing real-world activities such as running a campus café, participating in social enterprises, managing budgets, and engaging with the surrounding community. Each student develops an Individualized Service Plan tailored to their personal goals, ensuring that programming is centered on their strengths, interests, and aspirations.
At the heart of Meristem’s mission is the belief that every person deserves control over their own life story. Through a holistic approach grounded in dignity, collaboration, and self-advocacy, Meristem helps young adults discover not only what they can do, but who they want to become.
Josh Hoover represents Assembly District 7, which includes the cities of Citrus Heights, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova and the unincorporated communities of Carmichael, Fair Oaks, FoothillFarms, Gold River, Mather, McClellan Park, North Highlands, Orangevale, and Rosemont.
